The Murray region of southern New South Wales is home to scores of museums, art galleries and historic sites that all tell the story of Australia’s past — and present. Visit design-driven galleries showcasing contemporary art, cycle along alfresco sculpture trails, then learn about the fascinating world firsts that happened here, and changed the course of the country in the process.
Murray Art Museum Albury
At Murray Art Museum Albury (MAMA), in the regional hub of Albury, you’ll enjoy a contemporary art experience across 10 gallery spaces. In addition to collections comprising more than 2,400 photographs, paintings, ceramics, woodcarvings and Aboriginal artefacts — highlights include pieces by Tracey Moffatt, Max Dupain, Richard Woldendorp and Phillip Quirk — the gallery hosts touring exhibitions, workshops and talks, art courses and interactive cultural experiences.
Yindyamarra Sculpture Trail
The stunning Yindyamarra Sculpture Trail is a five-kilometre section of the Wagirra Trail, which runs along the banks of the Murray River on the outskirts of Albury and is lined with 11 larger-than-life outdoor installations created by local Aboriginal artists. Walk or cycle between Kremur Street and the Wonga Wetlands — home to an astounding number of birds and native animals — while learning about the region’s Aboriginal heritage and the cultural significance of the Murray, as detailed on interpretative panels en route and via videos accesses on your smartphone.
Jindera Pioneer Museum
Housed in the former home and shop of the Wagner family, who were among the region’s first German settlers in the mid 1800s, the Jindera Pioneer Museum occupies a cottage that is thought to be the oldest of its kind in this part of the state. You’ll find the museum in Jindera, a 15-minute drive from Albury. Once a general store, the main building is now full of fascinating 19th-century artefacts and furniture that relive the story of German immigrants in NSW. In addition to galleries, you can browse the former blacksmith’s shop and stable, and peruse historic farm equipment set across expansive grounds.
Corowa Federation Museum
Along the Murray River, the town of Corowa played a significant role in federation, leading the charge to unite the six colonies that existed in Australia in the late 1800s — it finally happened in 1901, with a federal parliament formed to govern the entire country. The fascinating story is detailed at the Corowa Federation Museum, which also houses a collection of historic Aboriginal artefacts as well as horse-drawn vehicles and agricultural equipment.

Holbrook Submarine Museum
In the town of Holbrook, around 20km northeast of Albury, the Holbrook Submarine Museum tells the story of how the HMAS Otway came to have its final resting place in this peaceful patch of southern NSW. Learn about the brave young submariner whose exploits during World War I earned him the honour of having a town named after him, and peruse an incredible display of photos and memorabilia, including submarine escape suits, a torpedo and an original Jolly Roger flag.
Bonegilla Migrant Experience
Once home to churches, banks, sporting fields, cinemas, a hospital and police station, the Bonegilla Migrant Reception and Training Centre outside Albury has been transformed into a shrine to the more than 300,000 migrants who passed through here up until 1971. The museum today brings to life the stories of these courageous souls, who touched down and were processed and allocated jobs in the years following World War II.
